The Fachoboi Students Union held their annual general to discuss pertinent issues related to the community. The following people were in attendance; the chief, unit committee member, women representative, PTA representative, assembly member, graduates and all students as well as community members.
The leadership of the union said this was the sixth to seventh year the association was running, they said their main objective is to get all children of school going age into school. All in all the meeting was a success as this and other matters were discussed.
A notable aspect of the meeting however was when the association gave the opportunity for the elders and the community members to advice the youth. Most of those who spoke centered their speech on the spate at which school girls were dropping out of school. Contributing to the discussions, the elders said most of the perpetrators were their own youth who lure these girls sometimes out of school. They added that the youth in the community should allow the children to complete their education first. They also added that even though the community members are not supposed to intermarry, such things are happening.
The Assembly member added his voice and reminded the youth that incest carries a minimum sentence of 25 and that any perpetrator caught will face the full rigours of the law. He also added that girls should be given the peace of mind to pursue their educational career.
Speaking to the president of the association on the sidelines of the meeting, Mr. Ibrahim Afuo, he said the association was very worried at the level at which the girls drop out of school and end up cohabiting with men. He said the association was taking up the challenge to educate both parents and their children on how to eradicate the menace. Mr. Afuo also said the association was very particular concerning how students were learning in school and whether they were making the good grades to compete with their colleagues in the cities and towns. The association also awarded the best student in the BECE from Fachoboi for her outstanding performance in the just ended examination.
Nuratu Nyame was happy that her efforts had been recognised. She was given two complete exercise books to help her in school from the association.
Wonderful work.
